What Is A Fitness Coach?

Under the traditional model within the fitness industry today, a client hires a "personal trainer" at a cost that is at the very minimum a price of $50.00 per hour. He will pay the trainer to meet with him/her once or twice a week to perform "one on one",  individual workouts.

The personal trainer will then devise a workout and will usually help by directing the movements/routines and "motivating" his client through the entire time of a one hour workout.

While I see nothing wrong with this paradigm to a certain extent, I also find it grossly inadequate in today's world. The average individual could not afford this luxury even if it were necessary. In our busy world, when we often need to "sneak in" a workout, scheduling alone will contribute making this a difficult proposition.

It is my opinion that the model is outdated and we need a new model that can help even the average middle class individual achieve his or her potential.

What I'm actually proposing is what I'd like to consider as a "working mans" fitness trainer. The average working man or woman doesn't need someone breathing down their throat directing, pushing or "motivating" on a regular basis. To make these changes into a life long habit, we need to quickly learn how to plan our own routines and motivate ourselves.

The average working individual needs some general direction, a sense of purpose and needs to learn how to engage their own already developed work ethic towards the goals set before them.

As a fitness coach, I'd consider it my responsibility to help my clients find the type of activity that "Blows their hair back". It's my responsibility to help each client define measurable, realistic (yet significant) and personally meaningful goals. I can show my clients how to engage their work ethic to maintain a lifetime of fitness and to balance activity and diet in order to develop an integrated, lifelong philosophy on diet and exercise that would forever transcend temporary diets and workout plans.

In my model, I am contracted for periods of 3 months (quarterly). Each quarter begins and ends with an EXTENSIVE fitness assessment. The beginning assessment is analyzed and a plan of action is developed. At the end of each quarter the assessment is analyzed and growth/progress is noted (and expected!). If I am successful as a fitness coach, my services will be unnecessary after a single years time.
